因幡の国智土師郷は、村の柿渋で瀬戸内の因島の塩を交易することで豊かになった。十年後、野武士の一団がその村を襲う。村は、蒙古襲来時に日本で捕虜になった胡人の息子を中心に、古代中国で開発された弓の一種・弩を手にした、因幡の百姓たちの物語。
黒澤明監督の傑作の一つ、「七人の侍」。黒澤監督は、この映画のアイデアを「とある資料がヒントになった」と、NHKの番組の中で語っている。その資料が何だったのか、監督亡き後は、知る由もないが。「七人の侍」公開から55年。「1342年、百姓が悪党の襲来に備え、侍を八人雇った」という神奈川県・称名寺に残る古文書を基に、新たな物語が生まれた。タイトルは「弩（ど）」。家族を、そして村を豊にするために、わったい（因幡方言＝規格外の自由人）に道を切り拓いていく百姓・吾輔の生きざまを、悪党との戦いを交え描いた時代小説。青い目の侍や農民、日本ではなじみの浅い武器、この本のタイトルにもなっている弩（クロスボー）が活躍したりと、驚きの設定だが、それもまた、日本の史実なのだ。
